“Please describe ways you are committed to living an active lifestyle.”
Most people define “active” as athletic—reps, routines, laps around a track. For me, it’s about mental and physical motion. It’s about resisting stasis, staying engaged with the world, and pushing myself to build, solve, create, or contribute in some meaningful way—daily.
Golf was my introduction to discipline—not the showy kind, but the kind that requires silence and stamina. I played varsity for three years, competing in state tournaments where one stroke could separate good from great. There’s no rushing a long game. You learn to focus. To reset. To commit to every small decision, especially when no one’s watching.
But my lifestyle isn’t defined by one domain. At my previous school, I co-led the largest art club—sixty students across disciplines—and managed its graphic design wing. That meant organizing each project, mentoring younger artists, and building systems for student exhibitions and collaborations. It also meant balancing aesthetics with logistics, art with leadership, and the needs of others with personal creative goals.
Since transferring to UNCSA, I’ve carved new paths. I helped establish and now help run our first Science Olympiad team—not exactly expected at an arts conservatory—and am active in the Asian Student Union, where I focus on programming that addresses cultural duality. Outside of school, I stay in motion through long bike rides, hours of walking (usually without a destination), sewing original clothes and quilts—many of which I donate—and coding. I created a peer-feedback mobile art app called CritMe, which now has around 100 users. Even chess, which I’ve played competitively, sharpens my focus and reflexes. I won my previous school’s championship not by memorizing openings, but by learning how to read and outpace a live mind.
An active life doesn’t require a uniform. For me, it means moving toward complexity, staying curious, and building things that weren’t there
