Google is redesigning the search box that has anchored its flagship product for roughly 25 years, turning it from a compact keyword field into a multimodal entry point for AI-powered search. The company said AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users in its first year, that AI Mode query volume has doubled each quarter since launch, and that AI Overviews now reach more than 2.5 billion monthly users.

Those agents are expected to launch first for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. The first signal will be rollout quality: whether multimodal inputs, follow-up conversations, and links to source material work consistently across devices, languages, and query categories. Reliability will matter more than feature count for users who treat Search as infrastructure.

The second is publisher traffic. Independent measurements of referral volume, click-through rates, and visibility in AI-generated answers will help test Google's claim that AI search expands the web rather than enclosing more of it inside the results page.

The third is monetization. Google has not detailed how ads will fit into conversational search, and that model could influence the design of the entire experience. Builders should also watch whether information agents remain limited to subscriptions or become part of mainstream Search.

Finally, competitors will be measured against a new baseline. Once a search engine accepts files, images, and live browser context at the main entry point, conventional keyword search may begin to look incomplete rather than standard.
